Frequently Asked Questions About PKHeX
Need help getting started? Explore answers to the most common questions from trainers.
Is PKHeX available for macOS or Linux?
PKHeX is built for Windows, but macOS and Linux users can run it through compatibility layers such as Wine or Mono. Results can vary depending on your setup, so test carefully and keep backups of your saves.
My Pokemon can't be traded or used in online battles. What went wrong?
This usually indicates a legality issue. Recheck your edits with PKHeX's legality checker and follow official guidelines before attempting to trade or battle online to avoid account penalties.
What does the Mystery Gift 'Received List' do?
Every Mystery Gift has a unique ID. When the game flags your save as having that ID, the gift can't be claimed again. PKHeX reads and updates these IDs for you.
Can PKHeX create backups automatically?
Yes. Create a folder named 'bak' next to your PKHeX executable. Every time you open a save, PKHeX will drop a timestamped backup into that folder.
Is PKHeX compatible with Powersaves or Sky3DS (Gen 7/6)?
No. PKHeX requires decrypted save data to load and export edits. Powersaves and Sky3DS backups remain encrypted, so they cannot be used with PKHeX.
Why won't my flash cart or emulator save load (Gen 5/4/3)?
Ensure you're exporting raw saves in the correct size: 512KB for Gen 4 and Gen 5, and 128KB for Gen 3. Converting to these formats usually resolves load errors.
Does PKHeX support the Gen 1 and Gen 2 games?
Yes. Make sure you export in the raw 'Battery' format (not emulator-specific wrappers) so PKHeX can open and edit the save properly.
